Buick introducing new 2012 Verano compact sedan at NAIAS

GM will reveal the new 2012 Buick Verano compact luxury sedan, the brand’s third new model in the past two years and first in the compact luxury segment, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) next week in Detroit. Verano goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2011.

An Ecotec 2.4L engine with dual-overhead camshafts, variable valve timing and E85 capability coupled with a Hydra-Matic 6T45 six-speed automatic powertrain combination is standard. It delivers an estimated 177 hp (132 kW) and 170 lb-ft torque (230 N·m), 0-60 mph performance of 8.0 seconds and an estimated 31 mpg (7.6 L/100km) on the highway, 22 mpg city (10.7 L/100km). A 2.0L turbo engine will be offered in the future.

Direct injection technology helps it produce more power with less fuel and lower emissions, including up to 25-percent reduced hydrocarbon emissions when compared with a multi-point fuel injection engine. Electric power steering and a more efficient transmission design help optimize fuel economy.

The front suspension uses decoupled MacPherson struts for better isolation, providing greater separation of extreme road conditions—large potholes, for example—from everyday driving conditions. At the rear, a technically advanced Watts Z-link design helps center the rear axle during cornering, which helps keep the Verano’s handling responses symmetrical on both left-hand and right-hand turns. The linkage’s capability to center the axle during cornering delivers a more-balanced driving experience because the rear suspension better follows the lead of the front suspension.

The Z-link design is also lighter and requires less space than a typical fully independent rear suspension. The lower weight contributes to Verano’s fuel economy, while the compact design enables more trunk space.

Steering inputs are executed by a fuel-saving electric power steering system, featuring a dual-pinion rack. Engineers tuned the speed-sensitive system to provide quick, direct reaction to steering actions and a strong on-center feel. The system has a ratio of 15.5:1 and requires only slightly more than two turns, lock to lock.

No BAS II?

The 1994 Taurus got fairly close mileage to that IIRC.

HarveyD

Is this the Buick version of the GM Cruze?

@Engineer-Poet

At some point, EPA changed the way the ratings were made so that it more reflected the mileage the average customer got. It is relatively easy to meet or beat the current rating. Anyway, you would need to modify the 1994 rating for a fair comparison.

@HarveyD
From the description, it seemed that it was a rear drive car but after reading more on media.gm.com

http://media.gm.com/content/media/us/en/news/news_detail.brand_gm.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2011/Jan/11naias/buick/0106_verano

it is a front drive car so probably it is built on the same platform as the Cruze although it certainly has a number of changes including a larger engine and different rear suspension. They list their intended competition as the Lexus IS 250 and Audi A3.

HarveyD

It is probably going to be an improved Cruze. Some of the improvements will find their way to other Cruze based models.

If they keep making cars like this, Buick could make a come back in the U.S. China sales of Buick can only save them for just so long. Chinese are discovering European luxury cars, so expanding the customer base is a big deal at Buick.

@Engineer-Poet

Look at this website to find a updated fuel economy rating for older cars.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

The 1994 Ford Taurus with 3.0 L Automatic is rated at 17 city and 26 hwy. The new ratings went into effect starting with the 2008 model year. So the Buick is roughly 30% better in the city and 20% better on the hwy.

Engineer-Poet

Got me on that one. I thought I saw "27 hwy" and can't figure out where that came from now.

The new BAS+ would be dandy on this model as well as the Malibu.

Engineer-Poet

I'd like to see a BAS III with an electric turbocharger/TIGERS on the 2-liter (or an even smaller engine). Reduced turbo lag on the low end using electric power to spin it up, and energy recovery on the high end.

Its based on the Regal platform, but the rear suspension is fully borrowed from the Cruze, and that sits on a different platform. Its not an independent rear suspension setup but this is not a sports car anyways.

It is a fine line the car makers walk when they consider a new model or feature. COST is the major driver and preserving profit margins. This may be why we see Onstar and Ford's Microsoft stuff, it is easy to do at lower cost and is a perceived value added.
