ZEON to introduce new anode and cathode binders for Li-Ion batteries

ZEON Corporation and its North American subsidiary, Zeon Chemicals, L.P., will introduce their newest grades of anode and cathode binders for Li-ion batteries at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) held January 2011 in Pasadena, California.

ZEON’s newest anode binder—BM-480B—provides three key benefits as compared to conventional Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) binders, including ZEON’s BM-400B:

  1. Low temperature: lower resistance and improved cycling performance at temperatures below 0°C.
  2. High temperature: improved storage and cycling performance at temperatures to 60°C.
  3. Improved Li+ ion acceptability: For Li-ion cell producers using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder systems, ZEON’s aqueous-based binders, including BM-480B and ZEON’s aqueous cathode binders, provide safety benefits and reduce overall costs by elimination of NMP (n-methylpyrrolidone) solvent handling and recovery systems. Additionally, ZEON’s aqueous binders are used at significantly lower loadings than PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), enabling higher density cells.

Kimiaki Tanaka (Director, ZEON) will make a technical presentation regarding BM-480B and ZEON’s other Li-ion binders 25 January at the AABC conference.

Zeon Chemicals L.P. is a wholly owned subsidiary of ZEON CORPORATION of Tokyo, Japan, a global provider of specialty elastomers, polymers and specialty chemicals. ZEON CORPORATION is one of the top producers of polymers, with plants in Asia, North America and Europe, and Research and Development laboratories in Kawasaki (Japan), Louisville (KY, USA) and Barry (UK).
