Mazda SKYACTIV fuel-saving technologies to make US debut at NY International Auto Show

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) will unveil its SKYACTIV technologies (earlier post) at the upcoming New York International Auto Show, alongside the North American debut of its MINAGI Concept and the United States debut of its refreshed 2012 Mazda3.

SKYACTIV is a suite of technologies, including completely redesigned, efficient internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and an advanced body and chassis.

The first application of Mazda’s new, high-efficiency SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine combined with SKYACTIV transmissions will debut in the 2012 Mazda3 later this fall. Nearly one of every three Mazdas sold worldwide is a Mazda3, which, refreshed for 2012, receives the SKYACTIV powertrain as well as a refined interior and exterior design and new safety features.

The MINAGI Concept is a compact SUV, and the first Mazda concept vehicle to fully adopt its new SKYACTIV suite of technologies and its new KODO (“Soul of Motion”) design theme, which was initially seen in the SHINARI Concept that debuted last year. MINAGI provides direction for the brand’s next generation of vehicles, and is the inspiration for an upcoming production model.

Zoom zoom, up the mpg and keep the handling.

This may fix one of Mazda's long term drawback, i.e. high fuel consumption.

I have the Mazda3 SP25 (with the 2.5L engine) and it's a superb car, very nice to drive. Unfortunately after 13,000 kms I'm only averaging 10.9L/100km with the 5 sp auto on mostly urban driving. As Kelly says, once fuel consumption is down they'll be almost unbeatable.

In fact the latest figures here in Oz show that the Mazda3 is the top-selling private car in the country. The large Holden Commodore is #1 but only through fleet and government sales.
