Frost & Sullivan: 16 million vehicles in Europe will have basic voice interface, 7 million will have advanced voice interface by 2017
According to an analyst comment from Frost & Sullivan on the European market for voice control interface, steering wheel controls and multifunctional knobs, about 16 million vehicles will have basic voice interface and 7 million vehicles are likely to have an advanced voice interface in Europe by 2017.
As voice is a form of communication which does not distract the driver, it allows the user to access all in-vehicle functions in a safe way. However, adding speech to the HMI [human-machine interface] presents two distinct challenges: accurately acquiring the user’s speech and creating a dialog system that does not require the driver’s full attention.—Krishna Jayaraman, Research Analyst
Steering wheel controls, which are linked to voice control interface, will be found in 16.5 million vehicles in Europe by 2017, whereas multifunctional knobs will see a steady penetration in luxury segment automotives. About 1.5 million vehicles in Europe are forecast to have multifunctional knobs by 2017.
The market for multifunctional knobs is primarily driven by premium European automotive OEMs. Penetration of multifunctional knobs in Europe is expected to be 7.8% by 2017, driven purely by Luxury automotive segment OEMs such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Audi. Demand for multi-functional knobs is driven by the possibility of integrating several functions within a single interface such as media controls, telephony, navigation, and HVAC within the drivers’ reach. However, constraints in the interior space restrict the penetration of multifunctional knobs in the floor console area.
Safety of the driver remains the top priority when selecting an HMI solution. All HMI options have limitations, so a single HMI option will not be sufficient to access all in-vehicle functionalities, Frost & SUllivan says. Instead, a multimodal approach is needed where different HMI options complement each other and play an equal role for operating in-vehicle functionalities in a prioritized and structured way. This will ensure reduced distraction and a safer driving environment.
