ABB wins $1B order for offshore wind power connection

ABB has won an order worth around $1 billion from the Dutch-German transmission grid operator TenneT to supply a power link connecting offshore North Sea wind farms to the German mainland grid. This is the largest power transmission order in ABB’s history.

It will deploy the world’s largest offshore HVDC (high-voltage direct

current) system with a rating of more than 900 megawatts (MW), keeping electrical losses to less than 1% per converter station. The completed link will be capable of supplying more than 1.5 million households with wind-generated electricity.

ABB will design, engineer, supply and install the offshore platform, the offshore and onshore converter stations and the land and sea cable systems. ABB’s HVDC Light transmission technology will transport power from the 400 MW Gode Wind II and other wind farms to an offshore HVDC converter station, which will transmit the electricity to the onshore HVDC station at Dörpen on the German coast via 135 kilometers of underwater and underground cables. A converter station here will feed electricity into the mainland grid.

ABB’s HVDC Light transmission technology offers environmental benefits such as neutral electromagnetic fields and compact converter stations. It is suited for connecting remote offshore wind farms to mainland networks and overcoming distance limitations and grid constraints, while ensuring minimal electrical losses and efficient performance. The 320-kilovolt cable voltage capacity in this latest system is the highest level used for HVDC transmission with extruded cables.

Scheduled to be operational in 2015, this offshore network will help to avoid more than three million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year by replacing fossil-fuel based generation. Germany’s installed wind power capacity of more than 27 gigawatts presently meets about 8% of its electricity requirements. Plans are to double that by 2020. This is the third offshore wind connection order for ABB in Germany, following the 800 MW Dolwin1 link awarded last year and previously the BorWin1 project.

Funny how we've had the wind turbine president in the White House for almost three years, now with GE's Jeff Immelt as a senior advisor, and NOT ONE offshore wind project has been started in US waters...NONE.

Great news.
I only hope this green electricity will be used to replace fossil power plants and not to replace nuclear plants. Otherwise all these nice windmills won't do anything against climate change, energy security or trade deficits.

The local Coal Lobby is strong enough to block it.

ToppaTom

Nothing to block.

Lobbyists do not vote - not in the house nor in the senate.

"Nothing to block.

ToppaTom, they vote every day and don't even enter chambers..

We the lobbies and speculators represent the people best interests. It is costing us more and more the get our friends elected and to make sure that they vote the right way ounce elected.

ToppaTom

Lobbyists do not vote, they buy the politicians in the administration (a custom known as "Chicago free enterprise").

We elected an administration with no sense of integrity with regard to earmarks or lobbying.

Lobbying is (unfortunately) legal.

Accepting money from lobbyists is NOT legal - BUT see paragraph 2 above.

Speculating is the same as buying a house and hoping it goes up in value. A risk, and with oil and lithium speculation might raise the price early and create more sources before there are panic shortages - a little anticipation - arguably the administrations job but good luck with that.

"But our leader IS for wind turbines"
What leader? Nancy Pelosi?

TT, "Lobbyists do not vote, they buy the politicians in the administration (a custom known as "Chicago free enterprise")."

This fully originated with 'reckless Reagan'(the Great Depression taught the US bank regulation(law) and rich tax rates - which worked for forty years - until Reagan criminally dismantled the economy(with supporting shrubbery) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms
