Saft launches industrial production at Jacksonville Li-ion battery plant

Saft inaugurated an advanced automated lithium-ion battery factory in Jacksonville, Florida.

This high-volume production facility will build advanced lithium-ion cells and batteries for energy storage for renewable energy, smart grid support, broadband back-up power, transportation and defense.

Saft’s 16th facility worldwide includes the production of 1 MW of solar power from the largest rooftop photovoltaic system in Florida and fully-automated, totally flexible production lines capable of building multi new-generation Li-ion technologies.

Saft Jacksonville has an annual sales capacity of $300 million.

Saft was presented with incentives from the state of Florida and the city of Jacksonville to build the plant, and construction of the 235,000-square-foot facility was further funded by a $95.5 million federal grant from the Department of Energy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

This good news for USA and electrified vehicles evolution.

In the not too distant future, large, fast, automated 3D printers will make a multitude of high precision parts, of various materials, for future batteries and finished light weight colored composites for tomorrows EVs. The colored inks are replaced with the desired colored raw materials and deposited in controlled layers to form the high precision parts required. Specific digital designs will be done in far away design labs and transmitted to the 3D printers locations, probably located into the final assembly plants, to reduce transportation cost.

Foods will be assembled the same way, similar to Star Trek Food dispensers but using raw materials instead of pure energy. It is already very successful with chocolate making.

Good to see a new battery plant here in the US - but are they producing batteries that are going in any cars currently in production or soon to be in production with that capacity yet?
