Honda to showcase new 1.6L Earth Dreams diesel at Geneva show
06 February 2012
Honda will display the first engine from its new Earth Dreams Technology initiative (earlier post) at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March. The 1.6-liter diesel is the first in a new generation of engines being introduced over the next three years. Lining up next to the engine display will be the NSX Concept, EV-STER and a prototype of the European C.
The new 1.6 liter diesel will be the first engine from this series and it will be introduced to the new Civic in late 2012. It will be the lightest engine in its class, according to Honda, and will deliver sub-100g/km CO2 levels and a class-leading balance of fuel economy and performance. Honda will display a cut engine display of the new 1.6 liter diesel on the Honda stand.
Initial specifications for the engine:
- Displacement: 1596cc
- Max Power: 88kw (118 hp) @ 4000rpm
- Max Torque: 300 N·m (221 lb-ft) @2000rpm
Hyundai's New i30 diesel due out next month has more horsepower (126 v. 118) and also has CO2 of 100 g/km.

This will be a big deal in Europe where 70% of the market is diesel.
The previous 2.2L diesel was too large for many European applications.
Might even catch on in the USA if the price of gas goes up further.
The problem now is that demand for oil is so global that if the US or Europe goes into recession, the price still stays high.

I wonder if the IMA would work with the 1.6 diesel. That would be a good option. The IMA would help with the low end torque response and boost city economy.
