Chevrolet 2013 Spark mini car to start at $12,995

When the mini car goes on sale later this year, the Chevrolet Spark will be available in three trim levels starting at $12,995 including destination. Spark is a four-passenger, five-door hatch.

The Spark features a standard 1.2L Ecotec dual-overhead cam four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing that delivers an estimated 85 horsepower (63 kW) and five-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed automatic transmission is available on all models for $925. Spark also provides a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and OnStar.

Chevrolet MyLink in the Spark will include Pandora internet radio and Stitcher Smart Radio apps. Later in the model year, the recently introduced GogoLink—an embedded smartphone application that delivers full-function navigation including live traffic updates—will be available. Pricing for GogoLink will be announced later.

Standard convenience features including air conditioning, power windows, rear window wiper, auxiliary input jack, outside temperature display and trip computer. The safety package includes10 air bags, electronic stability control with traction control and brake assist.



This looks a lot like an Asian built 1974 small ICEV with a new envelop.

A South Korean built $13k, w/AC and 100K mile warranty sounds competative.

Try reading your own reference a little more carefully. From your reference:

Maybe, you meant the Tata sold 75,000 Nanos a year based on the November sales of 6401 Nanos?

Anyway, I am not sure what the point is that you were trying to make.


sd, I misread the 75,000 for the adjacent Nano picture.

My point is that if Tata can build and sell thousands of 4-seat highway speed automobiles for years at $2-3,000 USD - why is the lowest new car available in the US priced over FOUR TIMES higher?

Air bags/seat belts are cheap. Any Nano is safer than the millions of motorcycles on US roads.

US regulations aren't multiplying car prices for "safety" reasons.

The US standards for emissions and safety are even more stringent and would probably add more weight and cost. Also, where I live the rural interstate speed limits are either 75 or 80 mph. I doubt that there would be much or a market in the US even if it could be sold for around $8K. The Spark has air conditioning, electric doors and locks, rear wiper, etc as standard equipment plus a 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty.

Lots of folks are interested in saving five or ten thousand dollars, but sort like the 60 and 70 mpg cars in Europe - there's just no need or they ain't safe enough for the US.
