Ford 1L EcoBoost engine named International Engine of the Year 2012

Ford’s new 3-cylinder 1-liter EcoBoost (earlier post), which made its debut in the European Focus, has been named overall International Engine of the Year 2012. The engine also picked up the awards for New Engine and Sub 1-Litre categories in the annual event.

In 2011, Fiat won the top spot with its 875cc Twin Air engine for the Fiat 500. (Earlier post.)

The Ford 999cc unit generates 123 bhp and 170 N·m peak torque (200 N·m with overboost) along with CO2 emissions of 114 g/km.

The new 1.0L 3-cylinder EcoBoost was designed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the UK, the company’s global center of excellence for small-capacity engines. Engineers focused on improving thermal efficiency and reducing friction of the engine’s internal moving parts, especially during warm-up—the time when an engine emits higher levels of CO2 and other pollutants.

GM’s 1.4-liter range extender engine for the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera picked up the award for Green Engine.

There are rumors that GM is goin to increase capacity of Volt's ICE to 2,0 litre. For me as proponent of electrification these are bad news.

why would GM do that? It doesn't translate into more power or torque in a series hybrid, so why?

Let's hope that GM will do that to run the engine on Atkinson cycle, perhaps highly Atkinsonized, in which the hypothetical 2-liter Atkinson-cycle engine will have the equivalent power of a 1.4-liter Otto-cycle engine, but with higher efficiency that will bring the Hwy mpg of the Volt running on gasoline to be on par with the Prius.
But then again, may be not...may be they decide that more power will bring higher sale volume?

It is a little more complicated. The Volt is primarily a either an electric vehicle until the battery is depleted or a serial hybrid when running on the IC engine but clutches the engine in when running at higher speeds when the battery is depleted.

If you took the 2 litre turbo block, removed the turbo and DI and switched it to atkinson cycle and used it instead of the 1.4 it should give much better RE mileage. A more efficient ICE could be used more often to supplement power from the electric motor which means you can reduce the size /weight/cost of the battery pack. If the Volt could hit 45mpg in RE mode you could then offer it with 20 or 40 mile range options
