Höganäs selects AllCell as battery partner for new e-bike drive system

Swedish metal powder giant Höganäs AB introduced the company’s new electric bike drive system at the Eurobike 2012 show and announced the selection of AllCell Technologies as battery partner for the system.

A new entrant into the e-bike drive system market, Höganäs has been developing soft magnetic composites (SMC) for the electric motor industry for two decades. Building upon the company’s experience as a major supplier to the automotive industry and history of high volume manufacturing since 1797, the electric drive system’s low energy losses and compact motor design are made possible by the Höganäs Somaloy technology. The high efficiency extends battery life and consequently prolongs the driving range. Optimizing the entire system allows smooth and intuitive interaction between driver, drive system, and battery.

Following a rigorous vendor search, Höganäs selected AllCell for the benefits provided by AllCell’s proprietary phase change material (PCM) thermal management technology. The AllCell PCM is integrated into each battery pack, absorbing and conducting heat away from the lithium-ion cells and playing the same role that complicated liquid cooling systems perform in today’s electric cars, but at a fraction of the cost. Because no other electric bike batteries have a thermal management system at all, AllCell’s batteries last 50% - 100% longer than analogous competitive batteries, the company says.

E-bikes with the Höganäs drive system and AllCell battery will be on display and available for test rides at Eurobike from 29 August 29 – 1 September.
