INEOS New Planet Bioenergy plant cleared by EPA for production and sale of cellulosic ethanol from non-food waste materials

INEOS New Planet BioEnergy (INPB), a joint venture between Ineos Bio and New Planet Energy (earlier post), has been granted Parts 79 and 80 registration from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the production and sale of advanced bioethanol from non-food waste materials.

The Center is the first large-scale project in the United States to receive registrations for a facility using non-food waste materials (vegetative and yard waste) to produce cellulosic ethanol.

The notice of registration came after the successful completion of the construction of the Indian River BioEnergy Center (Center) and as the facility nears production. Construction on the Center was completed in June and the facility is currently undergoing commissioning. The Center is scheduled to begin production of advanced bioethanol in the 3rd Quarter.

When the Center is at full production, it will produce eight million gallons (24kta) of advanced bioethanol and six megawatts (gross) of renewable power annually from renewable biomass including local yard, vegetative and agricultural wastes. INEOS Bio has plans to run municipal solid waste at the Center after the initial start-up.

The Center is the first commercial plant using INEOS Bio’s feedstock-flexible BioEnergy technology, a combination of gasification and fermentation technology to turn different types of waste materials—including municipal solid waste—into advanced biofuels and renewable power. The Center is one of the first projects in the US to produce advanced biofuels under the new Renewable Fuel Standard and provide renewable power for 1400 homes in the area.

The BioEnergy Center will serve as a reference plant for future INEOS Bio facilities and for companies and cities interested in licensing the technology for similar facilities.

This may be a step in the right direction to eventually get rid of municipal waste while producing need liquid fuels.
