Benteler-SGL inaugurates new composites production facility in Austria

Benteler-SGL GmbH, a joint venture between Benteler Automobiltechnik GmbH and SGL Group, has inaugurated its new production facility in Ort im Innkreis, Austria. The 45,000 m² site will begin manufacturing composite automotive components in serial production beginning in mid-2013. Benteler-SGL is investing a total of €36 million (US$47 million) in the plant.

Benteler-SGL is benefitting from the rising demand for lightweighting, since composite components aid in reducing fuel consumption and offer safety at the same time. Composite materials are ideally suited for the field of electromobility in particular, which requires lighter building materials to compensate for the additional battery weight.

Benteler-SGL’s product range now includes body shell components such as side blades, doors and visible carbon components. The company’s customer base includes nearly all of the well-known automobile manufacturers, primarily from the premium class.

Benteler-SGL GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 2008. The core competencies of SGL Group in material sciences and carbon fiber-based preliminary products are complemented by the market and engineering technical competence of Benteler, a tier 1 supplier to the automotive sector for many years.

Beginning in 2009, the joint venture company additionally took over the automobile business unit of Composite Technology GmbH in Ried im Innkreis, Austria, from the Fischer Group. The production has been systematically built up since that time.

This is good news for future lighter electrified vehicles. Many more such factories will be required to increase competition and reduce composites price.
