AMP Electric Vehicles and Momentum Dynamics form JV to deploy wirelessly charged electric paratransit vehicles; 2 vehicles slated for BARTA

AMP Electric Vehicles, a manufacturer of electric drive systems for medium-duty class 3-6 commercial truck platforms, and wireless high-power electronics company Momentum Dynamics Corporation (Momentum) formed a joint venture to supply fully electric vehicles and wireless charging pads for the existing Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) pilot project to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

BARTA is the first major transportation authority in Pennsylvania to deploy fully electric vehicles, and the first in the US to deploy electric paratransit vehicles. The Board of Directors for BARTA voted on and approved the purchasing agreement of two vehicles from AMP Electric Vehicles at a board meeting.

The BARTA project is being funded by Momentum Dynamics, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania-Department of Environmental Protection, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

AMP is really unmatched with the technology they have developed for this vehicle class. When proven successful, this pilot program with BARTA will show the pathway to wireless vehicle electrification and will assist operators of fleet vehicles to reduce their operating costs dramatically. They will be able to transition cost effectively to a zero-emission vehicle solution.

Another advantage of converting existing fleet vehicles to electric drive by using the AMP model is that it allows private, municipal and state or federal vehicle managers to recycle older vehicles.

—Andy Daga, CEO of Momentum Dynamics

AMP recently released two all-electric demonstration models: the AMP MLe, based on the Mercedes ML 350, and the AMP GCE, based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, both qualifying for the federal tax credit for EVs. In the commercial area, the company also concentrates on the electrification of fleet vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks and vans.

Momentum Dynamics was formed in 2009 and has specialized in high-power wireless charging using resonant magnetic induction.
