New entry-level diesel for BMW 5 Series; 4-cylinder 518d
29 May 2013
BMW has added the 518d to its new 5-Series line-up as a new entry-level diesel variant. The four-cylinder diesel with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and 105 kW/143 hp can be ordered for both the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW 5 Series Touring (but not in the US, where BMW is launching the 535d, earlier post).
The BMW 518d Sedan records fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers (52.3 mpg US) and CO2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometer.
With 360 N·m (266 lb-ft) of torque, the Euro 6 compliant 518d accelerates from 0-62 mph in 9.7 seconds.
It is a pity they don't sell it and the 520D in the USA.
The 520D is quite a car (about 1.5 seconds faster 0-60 than the 518), and very good value in countries where taxation is based on (nominal) CO2 figures.
I suppose the 518d will be popular with taxis, and making people feel good about buying 520d's
