Congressmen introduce bill to allow ethanol produced from natural gas to be included under RFS

Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) and Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA) introduced legislation—the Domestic Alternative Fuels Act, H.R. 1959—that would allow ethanol produced from domestic natural gas to be included under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and compete with corn-based ethanol.

Original co-sponsors include: Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX); Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX); Rep. Eric “Rick” Crawford (R-AR); Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX); Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK); Rep. Gene Green (D-TX); Rep. Blake Fahrenthold (R-TX); Rep. Tim Griffin (R-AR); Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX); Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX); Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR); Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX); Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT); Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX); and Rep. Thomas Marino (R-PA).

H.R. 1959 would establish Domestic Alternative Fuel as an independent fuel category and list it within the regulations that specify volume obligations to meet the RFS.

Groups in support of the Domestic Alternative Fuels Act include: National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Chicken Council, America’s Natural Gas Alliance.

Hmmmm, Ethanol from gas is certainly Ethanol, but it is not "renewable" ethanol.

I wonder what the energy balance is like making ethanol from Gas compared to some other GTL process.

So what's better: ethanol from corn, with its poor EROEI, impacts on food prices, water quality, etc. or ethanol from natural gas, born of fracking and non-renewable by definition?

Perverse incentives result in perverse outcomes, one way or another.

Bio-ethanol is for the US a domestic supply of energy with a lower CO2 than traditional petrol and diesel - advantages which can be argued to justify subsidy. So what are the externalitiess that justification for subsidizing NG-ethanol? Just use the NG as natural gas.

Engineer-Poet

Using NG as natural gas fuel doesn't give profits to the (petro)chemical plant owners.

Renewable NG?

I think right now its more important to push domestic sources of fuel no matter f they are green as green can be so that we can get to 100% domestic sources of fuel as fast as we can.

Because I don't know about you but it looks like another freaking war is brewing and im damn tired of em. Id like to see us go domestic and let china and india fight the next war for oil instead of us. Lets sit the damn dance out please.

Excellent approach W2000. USA can produce all the energy (food, goods and services) it needs. If more is needed, Canada is next door?

Powerful local Hawks, Oil, Mil-Industries may not like it but they will get use to it or move out.

What will happen when the middle East, Africa, Asia +++ is under BRIC control? Mind you, it may happen any way, why send troops to far away lands?
