SAE and IEEE team up on CyberSecurity for the Transportation Industry Meeting

SAE international has paired with IEEE to develop the CyberSecurity for the Transportation Industry Meeting that will be held on 23 September at the Palais des congrés de Montréal in Montreal, Québec.

This one-day technical symposium will address critical issues surrounding the security in the the networking of current and future vehicles. No particular style of vehicle will be discussed, as this broad spectrum covers anything from manned to unmanned vehicles, whether they move on land or in the air.

The CyberSecurity for the Transportation Industry Meeting will be attended by academic experts and leaders in the cybersecurity industry, which, paired with skilled members of the automotive, aerospace, rail, and commercial vehicle industries will undoubtedly improve and solve issues that are plaguing each of the industries, the organizers suggested.

The importance of addressing these issues has never been more important due to the recent growth in cyber threats in transportation. This has caused concern for both stakeholders and consumers, which makes it a pressing matter for the entire market.



This ties in with a news piece on NPR yesterday.  It turns out that Ford vehicles (at least) with the advanced integration features can be hacked.  There is no security for messages on the CAN buses, so any module can send messages purporting to be from any other.  This allows e.g. messages sent by a hacked program in the radio to command the engine or the brakes and even push the power steering.

This systems architecture is dangerously flawed, and should be retrofitted with "gateway" modules which allow only one-way data flow from the safety-critical systems like engine, steering and brakes to the insecure, infotainment/consumer end of the network.
