ARPA-E awarding $36M to 22 projects in RANGE program for transformative EV storage

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) will award approximately $36 million to 22 projects to develop transformational electric vehicle (EV) energy storage systems using innovative chemistries, architectures and designs. ARPA-E’s new program, Robust Affordable Next Generation Energy Storage Systems (RANGE) (earlier post), aims to accelerate widespread EV adoption by dramatically improving driving range and reliability, and by providing low-cost, low-carbon alternatives to today’s vehicles.
When the agency originally issued the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) in February, it was anticipating about $20 million in awards to 8-12 projects. ARPA-E’s RANGE program seeks to improve EV driving range and reduce vehicle costs by re-envisioning the total EV battery system, rather than working to increase the energy density of individual battery cells.
Some of the projects selected will focus on developing robust battery chemistries and architectures that would improve vehicle driving range and overall battery robustness. For example, Solid Power located in Louisville, CO will receive approximately $3.5 million to develop a solid-state Lithium-ion battery that requires less protective packaging, which reduces cost and overall vehicle weight to improve driving range.
RANGE projects will also focus on multifunctional energy storage designs that use these robust storage systems to simultaneously serve other functions in a vehicle, further reducing an energy storage system’s effective and overall EV weight. For example, the University of California, San Diego will receive approximately $3.5 million to engineer a low-cost, low-weight battery and to redesign vehicle frames so the battery becomes an integral part of a vehicle’s support structure.
The awards are categorized by technical approach: aqueous; multifunctional; robust non-aqueous; and solid state. The projects listed have been selected for negotiation of final awards; final amount may vary.

Additionally, this acid-based battery could also enable widespread adoption of start/stop technology that shuts vehicles off when stopped to improve efficiency. |

I wanted to display a picture I drew, but I will try to describe it in words. I'm an artist and idea-making person from Wisconsin. I came up with an idea many years ago to somehow use crystals that could produce electricity from pressure. I started by looking those up, and found tourmaline. Then a friend said quartz could produce a similar effect. I didn't know how to regulate the exactness that would be required for an electrical circuit, so I thought, perhaps, Quartz molecules, granules or dust, could be used in a regulated amount per mixture with a conductive metal, perhaps copper, put in an insulator-based casing, compressed in a vice, and/or pressure from the car weighing down on the cell or battery. That's my contribution to the effort. I'm an artist. Please, also remember, when coming up with new ideas, to not forget about cold, or humid climates. I don't desire to be known or recognized. thanks. :) Have a great weekend.
