Subaru to introduce updated VIZIV plug-in hybrid concept at Tokyo Motor Show

At the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru will debut the Subaru VIZIV Evolution Concept plug-in hybrid—an advanced form of the future-generation crossover concept VIZIV CONCEPT exhibited at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show. (Earlier post.)

The VIZIV Evolution Concept features a power unit which represents one of the ideas Subaru has for the future of its powertrains. The plug-in hybrid system consists of the 1.6-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct injection turbo “DIT” engine, combined with high-torque-compatible Lineartronic (CVT) with one front motor and two rear motors. The result is independent-rear-motor-driven Symmetrical AWD.

The earlier VIZIV concept featured a 2.0-liter Subaru Boxer diesel engine and the high-torque-compatible Lineartronic CVT with a single front motor that provides both vehicle drive and power generation, and two independent rear motors for vehicle drive only.

In addition, Subaru will illustrate its goal for the future of safety technology with the adoption of an autopilot system.

If affordable, this could become a worthwhile alternative AWD PHEV.

Depending on the size of the battery pack and overall system efficiency, this AWD PHEV could become a major liquid fuel economizer.
