Shanghai OnStar and China Mobile partner on 4G LTE telematics service; debuting in a Cadillac this year

Shanghai OnStar is joining forces with China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless telecom carrier, for the launch of 4G LTE telematics service across China. The new service will debut in a Cadillac model from Shanghai GM this year.

The strategic partnership will make Shanghai GM the first automaker to offer embedded 4G LTE telematics service in its vehicles in China. The new service is expected to deliver a comprehensive upgrade to OnStar service currently available. Shanghai GM plans to eventually make OnStar 4G LTE telematics service standard across the portfolios of its Cadillac, Buick and Chevrolet brands.

The OnStar 4G LTE telematics service will be based on China Mobile’s TD-LTE (Time-Division Long-Term Evolution) technology. With mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G technologies, increased responsiveness, and the ability to support simultaneous voice and data connections, the built-in 4G LTE connection will enable advances in a wide range of in-vehicle communications and entertainment.

Benefits for local customers could include in-vehicle Wi-Fi hot spots, new infotainment options such as streaming video for back-seat passengers, and faster application downloads. The OnStar 4G LTE telematics service will also significantly improve vehicle remote diagnostics speed and allow over-the-air software updates.

China Mobile continues to boost the development of its advanced TD-LTE technology. It had 700,000 base stations throughout China as of January, giving it the largest 4G network worldwide. This will support stable, high-speed OnStar 4G LTE telematics service.

Shanghai GM began introducing OnStar in Cadillac, Buick and Chevrolet models in 2010. This is part of its telematics strategy, which includes three major components: OnStar telematics, infotainment systems and future autonomous driving solutions.

Shanghai OnStar is focused on expanding its portfolio of telematics services and providing a more intelligent and customized experience to satisfy different customer needs. With more than 850,000 active subscribers, it is China’s leader in onboard telematics services and embedded hardware. Shanghai OnStar has an average of 110,000 daily interactions with its subscribers and an industry-leading customer satisfaction rate.
