Using Motor CAD to model performance of Nissan LEAF traction motor

UK-based Motor Design Limited (MDL), a developer of electric motor simulation software, has developed a tutorial to demonstrate the use of Motor-CAD and Motor-LAB to model the electromagnetic and thermal performance of the Nissan LEAF electric traction motor.

Data to set up the model was obtained using publicly available information, such as the many publications produced by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the US.

MDL software is used to predict the torque-speed characteristics, efficiency map and transient thermal analysis with the US06 drive cycle. Validation of the models is performed using measured efficiency maps and thermal transient data available in the publications on the internet.

The full analysis can be performed in just a few minutes as both Motor-CAD and Motor-LAB are optimized to give fast and accurate calculations.
