Mercedes-Benz Trucks approves HVO renewable diesel for its medium- and heavy-duty engines; neat or blended

With immediate effect, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is granting approval for the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) renewable diesel for the in-line six-cylinder engine variants of the Mercedes-Benz OM 470, OM 471 (first generation) and OM 936 as well as the in-line four-cylinder variants of the OM 934 meeting the Euro VI emissions standard. The engines are designed as standard to make use of the new HVO fuel. The approval applies to all engine variants whatever their output category.

HVO is a renewable diesel produced from waste materials such as waste fat, used cooking oil and also oil from crop plants. The HVO raw material is sourced from controlled and certified cultivation facilities and as such does not compete with foodstuff production. A leading example is Neste’s NEXBTL.

HVO, which has been produced on an industrial scale since 2007, is sulfur-free and contains no aromatics, while no ash is produced during the combustion process. The fuel can be used either in its pure form as an alternative to conventional diesel fuel or in a blend in order to improve overall environmental performance. Use of unblended HVO above all leads to significant reductions in CO2.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks established the acceptability of the alternative fuel for use in its engines by means of comprehensive testing. Since the characteristics of HVO mean that it is absolutely comparable to conventionally produced petroleum-based diesel fuel, no modifications to the engines or their peripherals are necessary. The injection process, fuel lines and seals remain unchanged.

The same is also true of the intervals for oil changes and for cleaning the particulate filter, while there is also no restriction in terms of warranty and goodwill policy. Engine performance and torque data also remain the same when HVO is used.

The approval applies to all fuels that comply with the prEN 15940 standard.

The in-line six-cylinder engines of the Mercedes-Benz OM 470, OM 471 and OM 936 span a range of displacements and outputs.

  • The four-cylinder, 5.1-liter OM 934 covers the output range from 115 kW (156 hp) to 170 kW (231 hp).

  • The six-cylinder, 7.7-liter common-rail OM 936 engine covers a higher output range, generating from 175 kW (238 hp) to 220 kW (299 hp).

  • The heavy-duty 10.7-liter Mercedes-Benz OM 470 unit produces between 240 kW (326 hp) and 315 kW (428 hp).



Use renewable diesel from Propel made by Neste, it is clear and refined from plant oils.
