Volkswagen up! gets its first turbo; 3-cylinder, 1L TSI with 88.5 hp

Volkswagen is introducing a new version of the up! at the Geneva Motor Show. In addition to numerous cosmetic changes, equipment and infotainment system, the new up! will feature a new 3-cylinder 1.0 TSI turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine delivering 66 kW/88.5 hp. The maximum torque of 160 N·m is available from 1,500 rpm.

The three-cylinder engine is the first turbo for the up! and the most powerful motor available in the model to date. Top speed is 185 km/h (115 mph), with a 0-100 km/h time of 10 seconds. Fuel consumption is forecast to be 4.4 l/100 km (53.4 mpg US), equating to 102 g/km CO2.

Previously the range of engines comprised two three-cylinder units with multi-point injection (MPI) that deliver 44 kW/59 hp or 55 kW/74 hp. The battery-electric e-up! cruises through the city with 60 kW. The eco up! natural gas version offers 50 kW/67 hp.
