BMW Group puts another 40t battery-electric truck into service
15 November 2016
The BMW Group and the transport and logistics service provider Elflein have commissioned a 40-ton battery-electric truck for material transport for the BMW Leipzig plant. This follows on the successful pilot testing of a similar 40t electric truck in Munich that began in 2015. (Earlier post.)
The truck, provided by Terberg Edgecombe, is used by Elflein on a daily 5 km route between the logistics center in the District of Dingolfing and the Leipzig plant.
The truck carries different vehicle components for the battery-electric BMW i3 and the plug-in hybrid BMW i8. The electric truck is recharged exclusively with electricity from renewable sources. Compared to a truck with a diesel engine, the electric truck will save up to 21 tons of CO2 annually. Recharging the truck battery takes three hours to complete. Fully loaded, the vehicle has a range of up to 80 kilometers (50 miles). Thus, the electric truck can attend a full day of production without additional charge.
In Munich, BMW Group and the SCHERM group used a Terberg YT202-EV electric truck to travel a 2km route (1.2 miles) eight times a day between the SCHERM group logistics center and the BMW Group plant in Munich, transporting different vehicle components such as shock absorbers, springs and steering systems.
