Study finds widespread decrease in wind energy resources over Northern Hemisphere

A study by a team from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and their collaborator from Purdue University has revealed a widespread decline in wind energy resources over the Northern Hemisphere. Using station observation data, the researchers found that approximately 30%, 50% and 80% of the stations lost over 30% of the wind power potential since 1979 in North America, Europe, and Asia, respectively.

Their paper is published in the journal Energy.

The study also revealed that global climate models (GCM) cannot replicate long-term changes on wind energy, indicating wind energy projections based on GCM simulations should be used with careful consideration to the model performance.

Our study is one of the first comprehensive assessments of the GCM-based winds against surface observations over multiple continents. We found that the decline of wind energy is a widespread and potential global phenomenon. In addition, the finding that the climate models have a notable deficiency in simulating wind energy is an important conclusion that needs further attention.

In 2016, renewable energy contributes more than 19% to the global final energy consumption. Of all the renewable energy sources, wind is one of the key players in terms of installed electricity generating capacity, only exceeded by hydropower.

Wind energy is a natural resource characterized by instability. Previous studies mainly focus on the assessment of wind energy reserves, but it’s not clear how the wind energy evolves over time.

This is bad news for advocates of "renewables"; maybe their energy isn't as renewable as they thought it was.


Wind supplies a major portion of the 19% of current REs and could supply a lot more by improving the wind turbines and selecting better places and higher towers to capture more energy.

Of course, lower cost storage units will also help to make that important RE source available 24/7.


REs produced 306 GW in 2016 but will produce 769 GW in 2021.

Almost half (50%) of all REs will be produced in Spain and China by 2021.

In 2016/2017, REs produced 29.2% of the e-energy in UK, 18.8% in Brazil, 15.8% in Ireland, 14.5% in India, 14% in France etc. etc. This may more than double by 2021?



How much of the UK renewables are the burning of wood pellets and other biomass?
Apparently at least about 40%

How much of Brazilian renewables come from sugar cane alcohol and the burning of biomass? Most of their renewables are hydro but alcohol and biomass are also important.



Not all current REs in (UK, Germany and Brazil) are Solar/Wind/Hydro but the majority is moving away from pollution/GHG burning of biomass.

More efficient Solar plants coupled with lower cost storage facilities is the source with highest growth and may be the long term winner..
