Adamas Intelligence: 54% of HEVs registered in 2018 contained NiMH batteries; REE deployment up 8%

In 2018, global registrations of HEVs increased 7.2% to 2.194 million units—50% of which were registered in Japan alone. Using a model-by-model build-up based on its ‘EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker’, Adamsa Intelligence infers that 54% of HEVs registered globally in 2018 contained NiMH batteries and 43% Li-ion batteries—down and up from 55% and 41%, respectively, the year prior.

Moreover, 60% of HEV battery capacity deployed globally in 2018 was NiMH, 39% was Li-ion and less than 1% was lead acid.

Taking the above into account, Adamas estimates that the mass of rare earth metals (REEs) deployed globally in NiMH batteries for HEVs in 2018 increased by 8% versus the year prior.
