In fiscal year (FY) 2019, the US Government consumed 0.9 quadrillion Btu (quads) of energy, of which 62% were transportation fuels (aviation gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, motor gasoline, and other mobility fuels). Jet fuel has remained the largest share of fuels used by the US Government since 1975.

The US Government has reduced its energy consumption 43% from FY 1975 to 2019.

• “Diesel/fuel oil” includes diesel fuel, distillate fuel oil, and residual fuel oil, including Navy fuels.

• “Motor gasoline” includes E10 (a mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% motor gasoline) and E15 (a mixture of 15% ethanol and 85% motor gasoline).

• “Other mobility fuels” are types of fuel used in vehicles and equipment. Primarily includes alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG); liquefied natural gas (LNG); E85 (a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% motor gasoline); B20 (a mixture of 20% biodiesel and 80% diesel fuel); B100 (100% biodiesel); hydrogen; and methanol.
