EPA awarding $4.3B in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants to 25 projects; $1.18B to transportation sector

The US Environmental Protection Agency has selected recipients of more than $4.3 billion in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants. The 25 selected applications will fund projects in 30 states, including one Tribe, that target reducing greenhouse gas pollution from six sectors: transportation, electric power, commercial and residential buildings, industry, agriculture/ natural and working lands, and waste and materials management.

The EPA awarded $1.18 billion to programs in the transportation sector:

  • Charging infrastructure for zero-emission freight trucks along hundreds of miles on some of the nation's busiest freight traffic corridors.

  • Incentives to deploy 6,200 light-duty electric vehicles; 1,750 electric trucks; 4,270 electric chargers; 18 electric locomotives; and 28,000 bicycles including bikeshares and electric bikes.

  • Measures that would reduce up to 3 billion vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT).

When estimates provided by all selected applicants are combined, the proposed projects would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 971 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050, roughly the emissions from 5 million average homes’ energy use each year for over 25 years.

EPA expects to announce up to an additional $300 million in selections under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program for Tribes, Tribal consortia, and territories later this summer.

EPA made its selections through a rigorous grants competition that was designed to be fair and impartial. The Agency reviewed nearly 300 applications that were submitted by entities from across the country and requested a total of nearly $33 billion in funding.
