Report: Nissan to buy 20 GWh of ternary Li-ion batteries from SK On
24 January 2025
The Nikkei reports that Nissan will buy 20 GWh of ternary Li-ion batteries for EVs sold in the US from S. Korea-based SK On—enough for some 300,000 EVs. A ternary battery uses a cathode material comprising three different metal elements, the most common combination being nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and manganese (Mn) (NCM). The ternary mix can vary in proportions depending on the desired characteristics such as energy density, stability, and cost.
According to the report, Nissan will begin installing the SK On batteries in around 2028.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on battery supply in March last year and have been negotiating since then.
Currently, SK On operates a battery plant in Georgia and joint factories in partnership with Ford are operating in Kentucky and Tennessee.
