North Ammonia and Höegh Evi to explore a clean ammonia supply chain from Norway to Europe
08 March 2025
North Ammonia, a developer of RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) ammonia facilities in Norway, and Höegh Evi, a global leader in marine energy infrastructure, signed an agreement to explore a value chain for supplying hydrogen to European industrial users using green ammonia produced in Norway.
North Ammonia and Höegh Evi will explore the technical and commercial solutions needed to facilitate the development of attractive scalable infrastructure to support further development of the market. Höegh Evi is currently developing floating import terminals for hydrogen, using its unique ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker.
In collaboration with Wartsila, BASF, Sustainable Energy, and Norwegian research institutes, Höegh Evi is developing an industrial-scale ammonia cracker to supply hydrogen to consumers. The technology will be FID ready by the end of 2025. Due to the flexibility of the ammonia cracker, it can be used on a Hybrid FSRU or dedicated Floating Hydrogen Terminal.
The Floating Hydrogen Terminal is adaptable in design and scale and has variable sendout capacity ranging from 30,000 tonnes H2 to 210,000 tons H2. It can accommodate storage from 10,000m³ up to 120,000m³ of ammonia.
Working together, North Ammonia and Höegh Evi aim to strengthen energy cooperation between Norway and Europe, creating a reliable and scalable supply chain for clean hydrogen and ammonia to support Europe’s climate and energy goals.
