California now has 48% more EV chargers than gasoline nozzles in the state
21 March 2025
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California has reached 178,549 public and shared private electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed statewide. California now has 48% more public and shared private EV chargers than the number of gasoline nozzles. The California Energy Commission (CEC) estimates there are about 120,000 gas nozzles in the state, compared to 178,000 public and shared private chargers.
Estimating a total light-duty vehicle parc in California of around 31 million vehicles, with approximately 1.5 million BEVs registered in California, gives a BEV percentage of the parc of around 4.8%.
Out of the more than 178,000 EV chargers installed in the state, more than 162,000 are Level 2 chargers, and nearly 17,000 are fast chargers that can reduce recharge time to 20-30 minutes. In addition to the public network, the CEC estimates that more than 700,000 Level 2 chargers are installed statewide in single-family homes.
California is applying billions to support clean transportation goals. California has doubled down on EV infrastructure across the state, approving a $1.4-billion investment plan to expand the most extensive charging and hydrogen network in the country.
The investment plan funds projects such as the Fast Charge California Project, which is a part of the California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project (CALeVIP), the nation’s largest EV charging incentive initiative. This project will award $55 million to install EV fast-charging stations at businesses and publicly accessible locations across the state.
