FUCHS Lubricants introduces-sustainable next-generation calcium grease for automotive gears
15 May 2025
FUCHS Lubricants, the world’s largest independent lubricant supplier launched RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1, a sustainable, next-generation calcium grease specifically engineered for automotive gears, including electric power steering systems. This product is both PFAS and lithium-free.
RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 represents an advancement in sustainable lubrication, and meets the most stringent safety, performance, and environmental standards. The development was motivated in part by increasing scrutiny on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and lithium hydroxide, which are now under regulatory pressure from global bodies such as ECHA, REACH, and the US EPA. In response, FUCHS formulated RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 to be free of these substances without compromising performance.
RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 is designed to minimize noise and friction, offering excellent compatibility with high-performance cast polymers extensively used in critical steering applications. The product was subjected to rigorous tribological testing using SRV tribometers and application-specific endurance tests simulating lifetime EPS performance.
FUCHS said that RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 demonstrated superior results in torque stability, temperature control, and wear resistance compared to traditional grease formulations. It also exhibited excellent protection against heat ageing, preserving the structural integrity of the polymers and ensuring long-term durability.
The advanced formulation delivers exceptional anti-wear properties and optimized torque efficiency, critical for steering systems requiring low friction and minimal noise, vibration, and harshness. Compared to heritage PFAS-containing solutions, RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 shows a notable reduction in noise generated by plastic-on-metal friction, even at low temperatures. These characteristics make RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 a top choice for next-generation electric and hybrid vehicle platforms where space constraints, higher rack forces, and NVH performance are paramount.
Formulated with a calcium complex thickener, RENOLIT CX SWG 0-1 operates effectively across a broad temperature range from -40 °C to 130 °C. Compared to traditional lithium soap-based greases, it delivers superior wear protection, with a 4 Ball Wear test result of 0.45 mm and a 4 Ball EP Weld Load of 315 kgf. Its low temperature torque performance and reduced coefficient of friction further underscore its readiness for the demands of modern automotive systems.
